An Unfunny Joke and a Fuming Mob: A Perspective on the 'Latent' Row

I promised myself I wouldn’t write about this topic. After all, why give attention to such childish nonsense, right? But, oh boy, was I wrong.

By now, you’ve likely heard of the controversy surrounding a comment made on a show called India’s Got Latent. I’ll assume you’re familiar with the details, so there’s no need to rehash them here. The show, I’m told, follows a roast format, where contestants interact with a panel of judges. Some “influencers/content creators” made insensitive remarks, sparking outrage online. The situation has now escalated to the point of legal action.

After reflecting on the fiasco for a while, here are a few observations that I’ve made:

1. Fame is too Easily Accessible Today

Not long ago, fame was a rare thing. To be recognized, you had to do something extraordinary. If you made it to the newspaper, you’d keep the cuttings. If you were on TV, you’d never stop talking about it. But today, things have changed. Everyone now has the tools and a huge, often unemployed audience, to create clickable content with the potential to go viral.

2. Shock Value is the Key to Virality

In an age where everyone wants to be unique, there’s a twisted irony: The more shocking your opinion, the more you stand out. This is the quickest route to becoming relevant in today’s digital world. People in the public eye are constantly using this strategy to attract more followers and keep their name trending.

3. The Hunger for More

More views, more likes, more followers, more engagement, and, ultimately, more money—that’s the formula driving everything in the digital space. Every day is a battle to top the last in a relentless race for more.

The Incident That Sparked This Firestorm

Now, let’s address the heart of this controversy: a YouTube video containing adult language that wasn’t flagged as inappropriate for younger viewers by the channel’s owner, Samay Raina. Setting morality aside for a second, there’s a simple fact: if you post content on a public platform, you must follow its guidelines or risk facing consequences. From a legal standpoint, this was a clear violation of YouTube’s terms and conditions. This can, and has, landed all those involved in serious trouble.

While freedom of speech is important, it’s not without responsibility. With great freedom comes great accountability. You can’t demand the right to speak freely and then ignore the decency and public morality that should come with it.

My Personal Opinion

I personally detest lowbrow humor—humor that’s crass, vulgar, and lazy. There’s no depth, no wit, no nuance, and certainly nothing intelligent about it. I’ve long held this sentiment, and seeing others echo this outrage feels strangely gratifying. It’s a relief to see this obsession with mindless content being called out. OTT platforms, too, are teeming with questionable content—some of it borderline pornographic—and it all gets a free pass. Meanwhile, this particular incident has shone a light on the state of digital content in India.

The Consequences of This Incident

Here’s the issue: This whole fiasco places digital content creators in the crosshairs. A single misstep by a handful of creators could bring unwanted scrutiny to the entire industry. With censorship laws in India already a sensitive subject, this controversy could set a dangerous precedent. This moment could spell trouble not only for influencers but for the gig economy as a whole.

I appreciate that people are holding these influencers accountable. Many of them have skyrocketed to fame with minimal effort, leveraging the masses for their own gain. It’s high time they see just how fragile that fame is. As for Ranveer Allahbadia, his cringe-worthy interview skills made him a laughing stock long before this debacle. And the others weren’t exactly seen as idols either.

However, the public backlash has been disproportionate. Calls for jail time, public vilification, and burning effigies are all a bit excessive for a few ignorant individuals who should simply be ignored.

The Mob Mentality

The mob has been relentless, acting like a dog with a bone. They’ve abandoned reason in favor of emotional outrage. It’s clear that they don’t genuinely care about morality or social justice. Instead, they revel in the downfall of others. The call for legal action and public retribution only serves to waste our collective energy and resources for a bunch of individuals who were simply too immature, too desperate for more engagement. But if we continue to hound them for their irresponsible behavior, we risk turning them into martyrs, which is the last thing we want.

A Better Alternative

Rather than inciting violence or demanding legal action, there’s a far more effective way to deal with these influencers: Hit them where it hurts—their wallets. Stop watching their videos. Don’t give them the attention they crave. Stop subscribing to content that doesn’t align with your values. The era of glorifying influencers must come to an end.

It’s time to take a step back, recognize the gravity of the situation, and take only necessary, warranted action.
